Silicon Nitride Ceramics

Among any technical ceramic materials, silicon nitride ceramic (Si3N4) has the most versatile combination of mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. It is a high-performance technical ceramic, very hard, with excellent thermal shock and impact resistance. It surpasses the high temperature capability of most metals and has excellent creep resistance and oxidation resistance. In addition, its low thermal conductivity and high wear resistance make it an excellent material that can withstand the harshest conditions in the most demanding industrial applications. When high temperature and high load capacity are required, silicon nitride ceramic structural parts are a good choice.

Hot isostatic pressing silicon nitride ceramic sintering
This method uses high pressure and high temperature to consolidate silicon nitride powder. The inert gas is used to isostatically press the silicon nitride body with closed pores at a pressure of up to 2000 bar (with uniform pressure on all sides) while heating the chamber. This process effectively squeezes out any holes/defects from the material during sintering and brings the density closer to the theoretical value. HIPing improves mechanical performance and reliability, however, it is an expensive process and usually only used in very selective situations.
