Carbide is a kind of high temperature resistant material. Many of them have softening points above 3000 ℃. Most carbides have stronger oxidation resistance than carbon and graphite. Many carbides have high hardness and good chemical stability. There are four ways to make metal like carbides:
(1) The metal oxide is mixed with carbon black and heated to 2000-2500 ℃ in graphite tube resistance furnace or vacuum electric furnace;
(2) Metal and carbon are synthesized at 1200-2000 ℃ under the protective atmosphere of hydrogen, carbon monoxide or methane;
(3) It is synthesized by carbonizing metal (or its oxide) with carbon containing gas;
(4) The gas mixture of metal halide, carbon monoxide and carbon or hydrogen interacts to obtain the vapor deposited carbide.
General products can be made by conventional forming method. For the products with complex shape, liquid slurry casting and injection molding can be used. They have covalent bond structure and are difficult to sinter. Most of them adopt the methods of atmospheric pressure sintering, reaction sintering, hot pressing sintering, impregnation and recrystallization. Carbide ceramics are widely used as heat-resistant materials and superhard tools.
