Carbide is a high temperature resistant material. Many of these carbides have softening points above 3000 ° C. Most carbides are more resistant to oxidation than carbon and graphite. Many carbides have high hardness and good chemical stability. There are four methods for making metalloid carbides:
(1) It is prepared by mixing metal oxide with carbon black and heating it in a graphite tubular resistance furnace or vacuum electric furnace to 2000-2500 ° C;
(2) Metal and carbon are synthesized under the protective atmosphere of hydrogen, carbon monoxide or methane at a high temperature of 1200-2000 ° C;
(3) Synthesized from carbonized metal (or its oxide) containing carbon gas;
(4) A metal halide, carbon monoxide, and a gas mixture of carbon or hydrogen interact to obtain a vapor-deposited carbide.
General products can use conventional molding methods. For products with complex shapes, liquid slurry casting and injection molding can be used. They have a covalent bond structure and are difficult to sinter. Atmospheric pressure sintering method, reaction sintering method, hot-pressing sintering method, dipping method and recrystallization method are mostly used. Carbide ceramics are widely used as heat-resistant materials and super-hard tools.
